Chapter I

By Day

The day moves slowly here. Water finds its level, palms lean toward it, and the paddies do what paddies do — sit perfectly still, holding the sky. From there the road climbs into the hills: pines, small parks, a railway, a cave lit blue.

A circular fountain in the Bogor botanical garden, ringed by red brick paths and clipped hedges, palms rising in the background.
01 The fountain at the garden Kebun Raya Bogor
A fast-running river seen between the trunks of coconut palms.
02 Through the palms A river in West Java
A wider view of the same river, stones in the foreground and a stand of banana plants on the far bank.
03 The bend Where it turns south
Bright green rice paddies under a wide sky stacked with white cumulus clouds.
04 Big sky over the paddies Somewhere on the way
Lower view of rice paddies, the green so saturated it looks lit from inside.
05 The greenest green Late afternoon
A single-track railway curving into jungle hills, a green signal lit beside a gravel path and rice fields on the right.
06 The line out A green light, somewhere west
Roadside stalls with red striped awnings under two leaning trees, paddies and a warehouse across the road in bright midday sun.
07 Lunch by the road Where the paddies meet the highway
A wide valley seen from a hilltop garden, villages and paddies below, distant mountains under heavy cloud.
08 The valley, after rain Looking down from the kebun
A brick-pillared park entrance under tall trees, with a hand-painted sign reading 'Situ Tirta Marta'.
09 An entrance, hand‑painted Situ Tirta Marta
Tall, narrow pines seen from the ground up against an overcast white sky.
10 Looking up Pines in cool weather
The same kind of pines seen against a brilliant blue sky with white clouds, the sun glinting through a treetop.
11 Looking up, again Pines when the cloud lifted
A garden lawn with the word 'GOLAGA' spelled out in oversized, multicoloured letters set among flowerbeds and pines.
12 Spelled out in the grass Golaga
A neatly clipped park avenue lined with pines and lantana hedges, flowering bushes in the foreground.
13 The avenue A small park, kept neat
A wooden gazebo on a damp green lawn, pine trees behind, the sky a flat white where the cloud has come down.
14 The pavilion When the cloud came down
A street corner at dusk: a tall lamppost lit, a tree, a parked food cart, shops closed up beyond a quiet intersection.
15 Lamp‑time A corner, just before
A plate of crispy bakwan fritters and rice cakes beside two tall glasses of iced tea on a brightly patterned table.
16 Sweet tea, bakwan An afternoon, between stops
A cave wall painted blue under coloured lights, with the words 'Sendang Drajat' and a long Indonesian inscription written in white script.
17 A blue‑lit blessing Sendang Drajat

Field note: it had rained the night before, and everything — leaves, brick, the brim of the fountain — was still polished. By the afternoon the cloud came down and the pines went quiet.

Chapter II

By Night

And then, the lights. Half a million of them, planted in the grass like flowers, arching overhead like rain caught mid‑fall. We didn’t talk much — just walked.

A neon archway reading 'Lights Wonderland' under a black sky, crowds silhouetted in front of it.
18 The gate Lights Wonderland, after dark
Two illuminated planets, Jupiter and the moon, set on a hill of glittering blue lights.
19 Two planets, a thousand stars The cosmos installation
Inside a tunnel of rainbow-coloured fairy lights, fanning out overhead.
20 Inside the prism Walking through
A fountain at night, ringed by a field of glowing tulips in red, yellow and pink, with visitors gathered around.
21 A pond of electric tulips Around the fountain
Pink lanterns photographed in motion, smearing into ribbons of colour.
22 Pink, moving A long blink
Hundreds of luminous blue tulips lining a path that curves toward a hillside of multicoloured lights.
23 The blue path Following the curve
A diorama of a tropical sunset framed in a circular window, palms and figures in silhouette.
24 A sunset, framed The last installation
Wide view of the lights park at night: fountain, planet, illuminated paths and crowds of visitors.
25 Everyone, all at once A Saturday in the park

    About this journal

Anna’s Travel is a small, slow-growing diary of places. The photographs are taken on a phone, kept mostly as they fell out of the camera, and gathered here so they can stop living inside it.
